JOYCHETTAN - JOY CV, Assistant Librarian, Sacred Heart College

What can be said about Joy chettan - സുമുഖൻ, സുസ്മേരവദനൻ, ജരാനരകൾകതീതൻ - that was the impression I had about him. I asked him how he was managing to keep his hair still black in spite of having passed retirement age. He said it was natural, and he had no help from Godrej family of products! But when I see Joy chettan now in the coffin, I observe the drastic transformation that has taken place - in the process of illness, his smart appearance had turned into what was a ghost of his former self.  The section of hymn in the funeral rites goes thus: We have witnessed the ക്ഷയം of the physical presence of Joy chettan.  We believe and hope that we will witness God's power that makes our beings അക്ഷയം.

Joy chettan brings to me the memory of three trips: The first was when last year, he decided to go to Holy Land.  He was cheerful and matter of fact. He spoke about the trip and its organizers – Chavara Cultural Centre (of which he had been a part earlier). On his arrival, he came to the office, shared his enriching experience in the Holy Land, saying that it was worth the while going there, and in spite of some bad experience regarding arrangements, it was indeed a good experience.  He had brought some memento for me – perhaps, it was a rosary, and it remains on my desk even now!

The second trip that comes to my mind was his trip last October to Vellore.  That was when I realized that he had some problem.  He came to the office –serene, but concerned; matter of fact, but hopeful.  He said that there was a big growth and it needs to be removed.  We don’t know what is in store.  However, let us try on our part.  Please remember in prayers.  He went off hopeful and rather cheerful.  However, after reaching Vellore, it was not much of an enthusiastic voice that could be heard over phone - a voice sounding tired, but still eager to share. Perhaps the long wait for actual treatment and lack of appetite and consequent reduction in food intake, might have made him already very weak.  On his return, which I came to know much later, I visited him, and was shocked to see his healthy frame wilting into what could have been his ghost.

Though I had a few other visits with him at his residence and at Cherthala, always he sounded hopeful – even amidst excruciating pain that made his nights sleepless.  I believe he was hopeful beyond hope, for he realized that there is no return.  While describing his status he was asking, achchanu manassilakunnuntallo,?

The third of his trips, we are now witnessing – he is to go from here to Kaduthuruthy, and from there to ‘the Ever Ever Land’ a trip that would take him beyond us for now, but will enable us to meet again as  part of that great spread of love. In the last two months, he had undergone severe sufferings, and I hope that will make him all set and purified for this great pilgrimage to the realm of lasting happiness.

Joy chettan was a man who celebrated his life with contentment – never being a complaint box, never bickering about his rights and the compensations he would deserve, rather working meticulously, doing his duty, he built good and lasting relationships. It was never his way to haggle or complain regarding the pay pack.  With what was given, he tried to live – a life of contentment.  Perhaps it was his weakness, perhaps it was his merit as well. All the same, with those limited resources, Joy chettan and wife Josephine built a little neat nest for them in the presently attractive residential area of Maradu. His two boys – Jijo and Joel have fared well – the former with an M. Com from S.H. currently as faculty in Bharata Mata College, and Joel pursuing M. Tech in Kanjirappally. The entire family has been an active unit in the Church related activities. The resignation and the serenity with which the family had accepted the reality of the illness was commendable.

He was keen on maintaining relationships – and the various echelons of authority was not a barrier for him – he had ‘friends’ among all of them – management, faculty members, admin staff, students, former students – a host of friends nurtured on good will.  He also saw to it that when an alumnus got a recognition, it was brought to the attention of the authorities and was in turn, contacted and appreciated by the authorities. Joy chettan prided himself to have been brought up by the CMI fold – initially at Chavara, and later on at Sacred Heart’s.

As the psalmist says, “My heart and soul rejoiced, when they told – let us go to God’s house”. (Ps 122).  This may be very true with Joy chettan, who had really been suffering in the past few months.  As St. Paul say in his letter to Thesselonians, ‘let us comfort one another’ with the hope that we shall all be with HIM – as this trip he takes would take him away from this limited world to that unlimited space of peace, where we shall all join and shall be ONE WITH HIM.

Dear Joy chettan, REST IN PEACE!

P.S. April 14, 2017.  Day before yesterday was the first anniversary.  Jijo, his son had come and invited me to come home for lunch.  I had noted it down, but had forgotten all about it.  However, around 1 pm, I was feeling hungry, but was resigned to sit aright and be in the office.  Then, office superintendent asked if I weren't going for the lunch.  After a moment, it registered with me, and I said 'oh yes'! And we went together.
There was a pretty good crowd.  Fr. Provincial was there (as usual, in time!) and some token prayers were already done.  Also Fr. Jimmy the parish priest.  And then, I too joined for lunch. Avoided the plastic coated banana leaf, and got my lunch served in a washable plastic plate.  Joy chettan's wife was telling the guests - father had come all the way up to Cherthala to visit Joy.  We will never forget etc.
Now Jijo is trying his luck with civil service.  I hope he gets through - He had a bank job, which he left, then he had some effort at teaching at Bharthamatha College.  Now it's the PSC! I wish him the very best!

SCHOOL FESTS & THEIR NAMES

There is some creativity - not some, a lot of creativity, and grooming - happening through the school fests.
The very titling itself is an act of creativity.  At least someone applies mind - either from his/her (most likely her) repertoire of knowledge, or by meditating, deliberating and choosing. More than often, it's just a fancy name, and not really a meaning-making effort. Regret to say, that neither the organisers (including the comperes), nor the audience or participants are really bothered or inquisitive about them.
One of them was named AEVUS - I was curious to know what it was - but, there was hardly any mention of it by the compere. However, I feel happy about myself that I am curious enough to look around and seek meaning of such titles. AEVUS - A word that came across me for the first time - as I can recall! It is tickling my curiosity.  Now these new gadgets come really handy.  When I noticed it, I felt like consulting my friends sitting around, but sensed that it would be of no avail. In all likelihood, 'it was all greek & latin.  Then the dictionary app in the android is there! However, it could reach only up to 'm'.  Then, that was better! Yes, it was latin ( I should have guessed). In Scholastic philosophy, the aevum (also called aeviternity) is the mode of existence experienced by angels and by the saints in heaven. In some ways, it is a state that logically lies between the eternity (timelessness) of God and the temporal experience of material beings.  Back at the desk, (google se bachke kahan jayega?) discovered aevus-i (masculine) means time of life, age, old age, generation etc. I think the school should rename it aevum, as that appear more suited for the occasion they claim or try to create.  In all the compering that sense of the word was not heard coming out. It would have made at least some people richer by a word!
Another was, Jahres Tag  (CKC, Ponnurunny).  This appeared more like German to me.  Most likely it means 'Annual Day'.  Yeah, as I guessed, it means anniversary.  Jahrestag is the way in which the e-resources showed it.  Again there was hardly any mention by the organisers about this title.  I am also curious as to why they had to use a mere German translation for that.
Elysium - was another title - The place at the ends of the earth to which certain favoured heroes were conveyed by the gods after death.  It meant something like a desirable place - a paradise? Again, here, I didn't listen to any mention or reference to the title or its inspiration.

They, usually at schools, take great trouble to have the invitations and the programme chart prepared. At times, they are handwritten, with the invitation specially designed, in a particular shape or colour, also showing forth some artistic or symbolic aspects - like care for the environment etc. through these media.

An important aspect of such organising is that of 'mementos' (often mis-spelt  and mispronounced as momentos/momentum) for the guests. Even if we make clear that we don't require it, they feel embarrassed without giving some such tokens.  Usually, for a person like me, they are burdensome, unnecessary and only adding to generation of waste. Sometimes, there is no point in refusing as it has been customized for you. I would rather have the money as it could be put to good use or personal need. In such cases, as far as I am concerned, for the outreach or extension activity.  But this is a very difficult principle to drive home with the typical organiser.

For me, the typical organiser becomes a villain when s/he is adding flex annoncements, providing bouquets which are often wrapped or held together with (avoidable) plastic, which are dumped else where. As our celebrations become more sophisticated, as it is bound to happen after every year, there is greater amount of waste being generated - flex banners, arch(es) with thermocol for lettering, disposable plates and cups for tea and snacks, plastic wrapped gifts/mementos and plastic carry bags for carrying the gifts/mementos.  In addition, celebrations of this sort adds to environmental pollution by the plastic decorations (toranam), plastic water bottles for the individuals etc.  The last item has been a newer addition, and it is indicative of an affluent institution, if not society, and it's doing immense harm, and is a thoughtless act of unfriendliness for the planet, our Mother Earth.

Often they have only my being Principal of SH College, former HoD of Rajagiri, and a person instrumental to bring harita award for Rajagiri to introduce me. That is from the wikipedia, probably posted by my nephew Rahul Payyappilly-Palakkappilly.  [Thanks to him, in at least one place, I have been introduced as Fr. Payyappilly-Palakkappilly, a distinction in identity, we Palakkappilly try to make to distinguish ourselves from other Palakkappilly in our small world of Thevara - we have, Kiliyaatan (which, at least some of the more tharavaadis among us would allege - because they were the people employed to drive away the birds - kili aattaan - from paddy fields or paddy laid for drying!!)].  That may be because I am not in the habit providing some vital information which would make it impressive for the audience. That also makes me realise that there isn't much I can speak about, let alone boast about - as a good person, an administrator or an academician.  When the welcome or introduction stresses a bit too much of my environmental engagements, I tend to critically look at what and how the organisers violate this value and how they can better it.

Just taking a rough count of the past five years: KRL, St. Thomas, Rajagiri High School, Canosa School, St. Mary's (EM) - Ernakulam, St. Antony's School - Kizhakkambalam, Christ Thiruvalla, CKC Ponnurunny, Delta Public School, Campion School, Al Ameen Public School - Aroor, Kristu Jayanti Public School, Global Public School, Bhavan's Vidya Mandir - Kadavanthra, Bhavan's Eroor - these have been the schools I have been invited to, to address either school day or awards day or something of that sort.

As the CMIs have been very reluctant to call me, I should compliment them for the same - for their level is much higher, or they stick on to congregational hierarchy.

In some places they do with great sensitivity and sensibility - like a green plant or leaf as a welcome gesture or a thank you gesture.  In some places they add to our liabilities by dumping on us unnecessary and wasteful baggage. In one school, I was presented with a big pack which I had to carry home and on reaching, I was pained to see 6 statuettes of Our Lady - Now my next concern would be how to get rid of them.

As a principled stand on reducing pollution, I have tried to reach such venues by bicycle or motor cycle avoiding a car and reducing carbon footprint - usually the pattern is that a vehicle is sent for you - which implies four trips (back and forth two each!).

The quality of report presentation in schools has drastically improved with complete reliance on audio-visual materials, sometimes, with actual acting out of scenes, or sometimes presenting a thematic progression in events.  Very often they are recorded with student and staff involvement and with adequate video footage.

I make an effort to appreciate the efforts and persons, highlight some of the activities that stand out, link the meaning words of the school, if found relevant, and share some insights to inspire. To my regret, I find that more than often the school authorities seem blissfully ignorant of their motto and the possibility of a common meaning for inspiration from that. While the rest of the programmes would be in English, I make a choice from what the parents need - after asking their preferred medium - except in three places, it has always been Malayalam.

ICHAAYAN - A LIFE SANS AMBITIONS - '

Perhaps that served as a healthy introduction for me to the world of wines - to which I still have a healthy attitude, of neither indulgence nor abhorrence.

Negotiating with the flat silvery മുള്ളൻ (silvery belly) was one such skill.

ON POST CARDS & LETTER WRITING

MIR group appears to be a business group with a difference! They are into construction in a big way. However, alongside construction business of cement-concrete-steel, they seem to promote also re-construction as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.
One thing they do, seems to stand out - that is a theme calendar.  It's not the typical calendar of a firm, nor the calendar stuff like that of Kingfisher. It is primarily a thought - or an idea (which can change your life!!), developed into symbols, pictures and finally, a calendar.  The format is desk top.
But it doesn't end there - there is usually some student (school-college) activity in this connection. May be a caption contest or essay competition or picture/painting contest on the theme.  Then a gathering where the winners/participants are felicitated, some food is shared, and most interesting among all, the idea-theme is celebrated.
I had the good fortune to be part of this exercise for two years.  And that showed that the themes were very sensible ones, and previous two were really closer to my heart - one being on 'motherhood' and the other on 'nature' or something like that. Then last year, it was on mirror, and the calendar had a mirror in it, so that the one who looked at the calendar could see oneself reflected on the desk top calendar. I had to join the releasing ceremony, where I shared my reflection on 'mirror'.  It was an intellectually stimulating cultural exchange.  That way, I consider this as a CSR activity.  In this age of very business-like relations and exchanges, in spite of the business of good will generation intended in this exercise, this can be held as a social outreach and a relevant initiative for a world getting depleted of cultural niceties and refined thinking.
So this time it was all about letters - letter writing symbolised by post-cards - those tiny rectangular pieces of yellow.  The backdrop was a collection of such pieces which came in competition - I counted about 420 (I forgot...).  It formed a very attractive and novel back-drop.
It struck a chord within me, as I was a regular user of post cards for a long time - they were small; they could be filled neatly and easily and they were very open, but you could write your heart on to them, if needed, and yet manage to deliver them as confidential matter, as hardly anybody would have ventured to look into what was written there.
In my memory they were just 5 ps per card initially, then it steadily grew in price - 10 -15, 20, 25. Perhaps, after that a quantum jump to 50 ps. and I think it has got stuck there for a long time! But then came the age of competitions and contests of all sorts - the pre-sms age, when post cards had to be sent.  That made a section of them expensive - Rs. 4 per piece. something like our sms pricing on holidays, now-a-days.
The reflections on writing post cards brought nostalgic reflections to the speakers present.  The Chairman, the famous novelist,  Sri Subhash Chandran shared beautiful reflections on letter writing of his childhood, youth and love.  He also recalled the story of ottal  and the letter the abused young boy, linking its core to the story by Anton Chekhov.  That was beautiful and ennobling.

I recalled the famous ghazal of Pankaj Udhas: :

In my desire to be a writer (author) I was almost reconciled to the idea that I may be at the best a writer of 'letters' which at least, at some point of time, were appreciated by my sister, by Asoka my good friend.  However, I look back and without any surprise assess the fact of my not having 'written' any letter for past many many years.  It has progressed steadily from a few mails, gradually emails taking over and dumping those letters of old times as 'snail mail'.  In the age of 24 x 7, and of express high ways, never satisfying speed, we are into txtg - not even having the patience to write even the full texts, but all the same awaiting response the express way.  You get irritated if you don't get a response in an hour.  You text and await answer, if it takes a day, or at times, even an hour, you get irritated.  You starting ringing up, and ask whether you got the mail/the msg; and why no response.

At times, it appears like a conversation on many platforms FB, twitter messenger services or even on  email. And there are many such provisions now, like skype where you can 'integrate' reading, writing and hearing skills - where you combine texts, visuals and sound. .

In this rapid growth of communication and connectedness, the old time communion seems to escape.  Some of the speakers share the nostalgia of missing the good old post-man, how he used to run/walk around/or bicycle around - being part of the geography and community, and be a link between the houses of the locality.
Now for the sake of our 'feeling good' should we retain the punishment of being a post-man.
The nostalgia of the homeliness of the post-card, post-man, post-master/mistress not withstanding, I feel their slot is now that of being part of history and museum. I suggest let us be candid about this.

Earlier, the claims were made  for reading, writing and speaking - today, writing is replaced by texting.  In the process, perhaps what we are losing is actually writing skills. You hands and fingers tend to get stuck and sticky in the effort.  Instead, the skill to key in letters becomes a basic skill.

In spite of my lingering nostalgia for pens - especially, ink pens (I still use them) - we must confess that the modern technology frees us from the stain of ink - and in the context of ink-pens disappearing and being replaced by plastic refillers and throw away pens - all of which add to the pollution - waste generatoin. The saving grace of the modern (e) letters - is that it is less polluting. Less hard copy  drafts; less the polluting tubes and pens, we are being blessed by the new technology.  Let us be forthright and accept the fact,
In this modern era, one of my major concerns - on the flip side - is that the paper cards, imply trees, forests being cleared.  So the new technology which appears unromantic and very techno, apparently lacking in relationships, is in a way, preventing our final alienation with the planet, with earth, its resources.
Come to our actual 'feel good factors' of this era - don't we feel good when we spend less money or no money and stay in touch - with prompt responses from our friends, relatives from all over the world - text, talk, see.
The new technology prevents or reduces our possibilities to cheat - the when, where etc. of our responses become clear, and not easily hideable.
The new modes of corresponding can reveal or hide - but more easily reveal ourselves - the level of sincerity will depend on us, the users.
It provides world wide mobility and reach.
And our earlier time writing skill, though being lost, is being replaced by texting dexterity. New skill sets emerge!
The whole process is more easily documented, stored and integrate our transactions, our documents, pictures, videos.  What a fabulous world!!
In spite of the nostalgic feelings, and in spite of my being still a user of the age old post cards, I think the disappearance of old time letters, with the new generation technology is indeed a blessing. And I am afraid, rather, I hope, that there is no going back!
Though there is an old world charm getting lost - there is a whole world of opportunities opening up in the new dispensation of communication.  A safe, kind, brave, new world (Aldous Huxley?) is before us! Let us face it, Let us embrace it!
Today's corporate social responsibility (CSR) should give weight to processes that are less burdensome to the planet and less wasteful. (The very plastic wrapped fantastic bouquet the oragnisers gift the guests are unwarranted and waste generating and an indicator of thoughtless corporate social irresponsibility of following some fads, and not being critically responsible). Thus, reflection and celebration of old times and post-cards, while being good, let us focus our energies on being kind to our planet and other beings, by our conscious choices of technology.

PS. The gathering was good. I thought I shared my candid reflections. But I sensed some sort of animosity - almost tangible. Then, Dr. Sr. Vineeta, former Principal of St. Teresa's was invited to share her thoughts - and to my surprise, she hang on to my reflections on wastefulness and concern for waste, and retorted almost vehemently that this obsession has to do with our mentality.  She thundered where does waste come from? It was not there earlier.  Now just writing simple letters will create waste was non-sensical etc. And there was a positive response from the audience to her response, an applause - as, (to my guess) people didn't want to accept the fact of their lives, and possibility of goodness in that, and preferred to have those tokens of nostalgia kept in tact (in spite of their never ever likelihood of using them). And the organising team and the beneficiaries sensed that I was being critical which was not welcome. They would have preferred me speak good of the organising, the theme and its goodness, rather than open up possibilities which were proving that their replacement was a blessing!
It was okay for me.
It was like the old saying:
Or as the Isha Upanishad goes:
With the golden lid the face of the Truth is covered.
Oh sun, you remove that! Let (me) see with true-principle!

I was rather convinced that hardly anyone among the speakers or listeners would be using a post card for actual correspondence.. . I thought I should get back and send a post card to sister as Christmas greetings!  However, it didn't materialise. It was bit too late, and we were exchanging notes on various issues over email or phone.

I did send post cards on my return from the retreat which I had begun the very same day. To four of my students who had invited me for their wedding. I was unable to attend them, and I wrote very personal congratulatory notes on post cards, in my own fairly legible and rather good hand-writing (after a very long time of having done so).  Three of them received no response. One of them, which I had sent to Thammanna (deep desire) of Botany, returned saying the addressee was not available! After all, she was from Fort Kochi!!

Education for Life - CKC ELPS, Ponnurunny

Christ the King Convent English LP School, Ponnurunny
CKC and I come from SHC.  There is some linkage between the two.  Both have Jesus Christ as the reference point. Jesus Christ is acknowledged as the King - ruler of the hearts, or according to whose rules the children should be formed as citizens of goodness and love.  At SHC, we speak about Jesus' Sacred Heart, where the aim is to transform our hearts into Sacred Hearts. A heart aflame.
CKC is run by CTC - Congregation of Theresian Carmelites and I come from CMI - Carmelites of Mary Immaculate.  The common factor is 'carmel'.  It's a hill in Palestine region.  A hill where Prophet Elijah of Old Testament times ran away and hid himself to escape the fury of the King whom he challenged for his unjust practices. As he hid there, God's voice came to him: Elijah, what are you doing here? And he answered: I am burning with the zeal for God the almighty. This question is being asked, and to be asked to everyone of us, especially to our kids here: What are you doing here? And 'dedication to excellence' as the motto of the school goes, should help them to answer : I am burning with the zeal for God the Almighty - not a zeal that would burn up others who are not likeminded, but a zeal that would first purify oneself, and make one a Sacred Heart, and in turn, also purify those who come into their contact.

As I stand here, I recall my own childhood as a student in a similar setting, in an English Medium Convent school run by SD sisters.  There we were taught the basics of English and more.
Once, while I was doing my III grade, Sr. Lucy our headmistress, stormed into our class room, as the teacher was not coming, and looked around, and shouted at us: 'why the class is so littered, pick up'. That was one lesson, I have not forgotten - that we should not litter.
We are taught nursery rhyme: Bits of paper... lying on the ground, make the place untidy... pick them up.  We learn the rhyme, but not the lesson. Nor are we insisted up on to live the lesson. That our learning, as Gandhiji said, should be for life, through life and throughout life.
One such lesson, which is of great value today, and which would underscore 'excellence' is that we keep our premises clean, that we do not litter, that we make the places of our use, better than how we got them.
Another lesson of my childhood days was that of shedding the jada being English medium student.  My father was speaking to me, and there was a casual reference to kizhakku, and though I knew it was a direction, I didn't know exactly, and I feigned ignorance, asking him, 'kizhakku?' what is it? And his response was shocking that he shouted asking then what kind of schooling I was getting where I don't even know what kizhakku was.
Since then, I have not forgotten to learn my mother tongue also well, in spite of all its limitations.
We need English to ensure our survival, but we need our mother tongue to ensure our life beyond the biology. I hope the parents and the teachers will understand the significance of this as an aspect and indicator of 'excellence'.
Excellence is God, or God's quality.  The Bible urges us to grow into that : Be perfect as the Father (or Mother?) in Heaven is perfect.   I am sure that your child here is being given that training - this dressing up, this receiving guests, this grooming them, this serving others, the way in which water is poured for guests, a special care is taken for a guest, anticipating his/her needs, like providing warm water for the speaker - all these are finer steps to excellence.  'Excellence', as the saying goes, 'would lie in the ability to go more and more into less and less'.
Dedication to Excellence should lead at the school level to three types of friendship: a) typically with peers.  Have great and lasting friendships from here - that should happen very naturally.  A friendship that cares - like Balan whom the great cine actor friend depicted by Mammootty in katha parayumbol, recalls.  b) friendship with God - God as a friend whom we can trust, speak to, share with, especially in those inevitable moments when we find that no body understands us.  c) Friendship with the Planet - earth as our mother, that we keep it safe, that we don't litter and make it polluted further. That we become, to start with non-littering people,  waste segregating people, wealth from waste people, and finally zero waste people.
In today's world, the much spoken about scandal has been the death of Rohit Vemula in Hyderabad University campus.  He is now a martyr for many, who gave up his life for bringing to the fore an issue affecting a large number of Indians. - that is alleged to be 'discrimination on the basis of caste'.  So I narrate to you the story of a seeker from the ancient times, who transcended such barriers in a much more rigidly hierarchical society.  When a seeker, usually only a male, approached a teacher, a guru, he is asked three questions: What is your caste, what is your family (gotra), who is your father.  Now the boy Satyakaman approached his mother and sought permission to go to be a disciple to acquire knowledge.  The mother instructed him, if you were asked questions for the seeker, you answer that you were Satyakaman, the son of Jabala.  When Rishi Gautama asked Satyakaman, the typical questions, Satyakaman the intelligent boy didn't hesitate to state that all that he could tell was that he was Satyakaman, the Son of Jabala.  Gautama told him, only a brahmin can tell truth in that manner.  You are a Brahmin, and you are accepted.
Now this can be challenged - is Brahmin on the top of a hierarchy? Or can only Brahmin tell the truth?  Conversely, it points to the fact that in a society there is hierarchy, and the hierarchical status is attained not by birth, but by the deeds and speech which are truthful.  Brahman is satyam, and we become people of excellence, when we 'adhere to truth' - satyagraha. When we desire truth - satyakama. And that is a possibility for everyone - to grow into the higher status by professing truth.
Let that be the dimension of excellence that we promote as parents and teachers and students of Christ the King School.  Then our entire learning process will become 'an ascent of the mount Carmel' where everyday we will be answering the question of 'what are you doing here' as 'I AM BURNING WITH THE ZEAL FOR GOD THE ALMIGHTY.
May God bless us all!

SH College - Provincial's Address

Rev. Dr. Jose Cletus CMI on Feb. 4, 2016 addressed the faculty members and admin staff.
He appreciated the staff for being a willing team in the process of attaining autonomy.  Now the efforts should be to be a winning team.  It is true that we have to move as the CM says,  ati vegam, bahu dooram.
In this process, I realize that we have an Amazon like situation: where  the turbulent muddy waters of Amazon and pure  waters of the small Tapezo join, but run paralally without mingling.  This has to be overcome by conscious efforts. We are curious about it, and also anxious about it. We consider it a challenge (velluvili) but also a vocation (daivavili).
We have to have the right mix of paramparyam, pariseelanam (seelangal) and paritovastha.
It is a fact that we have to take into account both the market (kambolam) and character formation.
In this context, the heartian community is invited to join hands in the four fold thrust of the CMI congregation for the present:
1. Of being a community - through communication and celebration - to communion of minds & hearts. For this the 3D formula can come handy - Dining Table, Divine Table (prayer & scripture) and Dialogue Table.
2. Caring for the Poor - those who are in the 'existential peripheries' of the world. Our effort to reach out and focus on issues of illness (like Cancer, HIV) and housing.
3. Reaching out to families - after St. Chavara - an effort to understand families and visit families of our students.
4. Global mission - reaching out to the ends of the world.
The session ended after a brief interaction with the staff with Prof. Rajesh James thanking Fr. Provincial on behalf of the staff.

CHRISTI FESTA - On Educating Young Ones

CHRISTI FESTA - 41st Annual Day Christ Central School, Maruthoor, Thiruvalla
CHRISTI FESTA itself sounds imposing, if not pompous. Now they add another name for the cultural events - AEVUS! This is how the new philosophy works - 'why make things simple, when we can make them complex?'

I am glad to have been invited - feeling proud of my confrere and batch mate (though junior, having managed to jump up, skipping one step) Mathukutty, the great Dr. Mathew Thengumpally CMI.  Proud for he has been nationally recognized for his contributions as a teacher/Principal twice (or more?)! Jealous that I could never have had any such recognition. However, when he introduces me to his smart head boy Suresh and head girl Sandra, that he had been a topper among us wherever he had been with some additional description, that becomes an award for me. On his behest, the kids fall at my feet (traditional mode of seeking blessing - kuruttam- gurutvam) asking that they be number one. I don't mind now imparting a blessing!! I say, 'be better, do better'.  It is more important to learn well, rather than be number one. Betterment is in reference to one's self, primarily, though there is no harm in your desire to be better than others, or do better than how others do!
I am proud and happy of Mathukutty - we are good friends.  That has brought me here.  He appears in the photo as if he is all set to take a leap - He is a puli, a paayum puli. When we lived together as students, we had to be very wary if we were playing with him.  He could very easily snatch a ball in our possession and score against us! I am sure that the school is thriving under his vigilant and experienced leadership.
I recall Fr. Kurian Mukochery the founder who happened to be a friend or mentor to my father.  I also remember other key people involved Fr. Joshy the manager, Fr. Jimmy, Fr. Antony - former principals, Fr. Mayanparampil - Vice Principal - all of them my friends.
I feel the school is very privileged to have a PTA and an erudite President like Mr. Haridas who has already given a very relevant message for the day in a befitting manner. I salute the PTA.
I am deeply impressed by the song sung by Vishak Thomas on baalyam! I wonder whether he has realised what he had been singing about - though he did it mellifluously.
He sang about it as 'maavin chottile manamulla madhuramaanu', also about, 'chelimannu' and 'mashithandu'.  When I came back to Thevara after a gap of more than 30 years, my confrere was planning to plant a set of royal palms on the school campus. Definitely, something is better than nothing (the gulmohurs - Delonix Regia, were falling apart, and hence removed).  I suggested, thanks to inspiration from my good friend Thomas, the agorean naturalist, that at least one country mango tree be planted.  I was convinced of it.  And I suggested that let our children see our local trees, and not just the same uniform stuff, but the diverse and the local which are disappearing.  Somehow it clicked with my good friend. And lo, we had a mango tree, right in hte middle of the campus, without being a nuisance to traffic or games (courts).  It's now more than three years and has grown up, and not likely to be destroyed.  May be the generations after me may enjoy a baalyam with the sweet scent of ripened country mangoes!! In addition, thanks to Fr. Joshy who took the idea in earnest a star forest was introduced and the campus has almost 30 varieties of trees with their local and scientific names for the children to see, feel and experience!!
But out here, has anyone of you children has had the experience of mango and its scent? of mashi thandu, of chelimannu? This is a generation, highly protected from cheli. They don't have chorry. Hence their immunity is less. I look back at my fortunate baalyam where I grew up in a small family of 9 children, being in the middle, and never having had the feeling to demand the many things which were even otherwise not really available. We easily felt that we could not ask for 'things'. That we had enough to eat was good enough and satisfying.  But today we are grooming a highly protected generation which has not seen 'mashi' then why should they have mashithandu? They have all in packs! Even family? Family packs!! They have not touched cheli, they have not heard 'no' and gradually, we are building a generation which is emasculated, weak! It is up to us to school them if not born tough (like CEAT tyres), train them tough, so that they can withstand the vicissitudes of life, from which no parent can shield them forever, except by a shikshanam!
When I think of baalyam, the Mammootty picture comes to my mind, where he narrates his story of childhood friendship (katha parayumbol) with Balan. Tears swell up in my eyes when I see the scene. What kind of friendships are our children having? What kind of shikshanam our children should have? That leads me to share with you two small stories.
A man, cobbler by trade was in dire straits and it was sever winter.  Urged by his wife he set out to collect dues from his clients so that they could have another warm coat instead of sharing one among the two.  But his mission was hardly successful.  Only a very few people paid their dues. That was not sufficient for a coat.  He thought of having a beer and returning.  Then he noticed a man, stark naked, shivering in the cold sitting in front of the Church.  He averted his eyes and went ahead for his beer. That having had, he returned only to find the man there.  He could not resists asking after his well being. He wouldn't say anything other than his name being Michael and having been cursed by God. He insisted on asking him to go home with him. At home, his wife was enraged and said that she would have nothing to do with him who has spent the earnings on drink, neglected necessities home and brought a vagabond home.  He was really chastised. However, he said humbly, Martha, for the love of God, pl take us in and give us food. When she heard that though not happily, she spread what she had before them. Then the MIchael's face brightened in a smile that was so consoling to all. He continued there, became Simon's assistant and got established. A rich man came with a high quality leather and asked to make a shoes which would really last long.  Simon entrusted the task to Michael and left to the town.  When Simon returned, he was aghast as the leather was cut for a soft shoe.  When he expressed his shock, there was a smile on Michael's face that lit up the whole house.  There arrived a messenger from the rich client saying that he met with his death on his return, and now what he required was a funeral shoe. After a while, a woman arrived at the shop with twin girls, and Michael's face was delighted with wonderment. When the woman saw that she responded saying the twins were not her daughters.  Their father had died before their birth and mother, on giving them birth.  Being left orphans, she took it upon herself to bring them up.  When he heard that for a third time, there was a heavenly smile on his face that was so consoling to all.  After they left, he revealed his identity to Simon and Martha.  I am an angel, cursed by God. I disobeyed God when asked to take the life of the mother of these kids, wondering how they would survive.  Then God sent me to earth as a punishment, asking me to find answer to three questions. I have found answers to the questions I have been assigned to find as part of my curse, and I am released!
The questions were:
What is there within humans? I have discovered it is Love, it is Love for God, or God itself!
What is uncertain about humans? It is death - when and how it would come.
What guides humans? I know it's God's providence, which is Love, which is God itself.

So finally, does our education lead our children to God who is Love, to the right kind of friendships? Also, to the wisdom - nityanityavastu vivekam. ability to distinguish between what is passing, and what is lasting. Hence as said by Gandhiji, 'live as if you were to die tomorrow and  learn as if you were to live for eternity'.  (Naaleyennathilla nammal innu thanne nEdanaNam)
The friendships that should develop in our schools should be of many levels: The first of it is usually with peers - that is good.  Are we friends in deed? Do we have friends in need?  Do we learn from our friends to be better? paadam saha brahmacharyebhyah! One quarter of our learning has to happen through our company with friends.
However, there are very many times, when such friendships belie our expectations - there comes the significance of having God as our trusted friend; like Anna in the book, who calls upon God everyday, or any time, and say, Mr. God, this is Anna! God as a friend in need, and friend indeed.
In today's understanding our friendship circle - love circle ought to exceed the human circle to encompass the planet of which we are part of - being friendly with Mother Earth, sister plants, brother soil as St. Francis of Assissi did.  This is also our survival strategy as is being sung poignantly in the popular awakening song: ini varunnoru thalamurakku ivide vaasam sadhyamo?
As basically learners, our children ought to develop friendship with books. That to have books as their companion, to possess a book always to look into should become a habit, an indicator of a Christite.
Such habits will lead to further friendship of a learner - a friendship with some faithful friends who keep us learners, seekers: They are the faithful sevants of Rudyard Kipling: What, Who, Where and When, and on a higher plane How and Why with which we understand, discover and explain the world around us.
But when we step beyond these six, and befriend a seventh faithful, WHY-NOT, then we become Christ like - who create history, who change the course of life. We honour Kalam & Gandhi, but when we are able to stand up and ask beyond the hows and whys about phenomena to whynot-s of possibilities we begin to fill the voids such great people (mahatma) have left.  When we are willing to leave the trodden path and go it alone, we make a difference like Christ, who thought 'why should we kill our enemies, why not love them, and destroy the enmity? A learner is invited to such a challenging path of a seeker.
I will conclude this by narrating the story of such a seeker.  This story is placed against the context of corruption and discrimination that is being found and experienced in today's society. Our leaders become tainted, and that has come to be taken for granted.  Rohit Vemula is no more, and it is said that it is discrimination as a dalit that led him to take his life.  Against such context, we recall a seeker, Satyakaman.  He wanted to make friends with the world of letters, with the six faithful servants. However the deeksha is given only when he is able to tell his gotram and his father's name.  He had neither.  When he asked his mother, she told: Son, you tell them you are son of Jabala. Though embarassing, Satyakaman, as the name goes, didn't have any hesitation in giving the answer to Maharshi Gautaman: I am Satyakaman, son of Jabala.  Gautaman told him, you are a Brahmin, only a Brahmin can tell truth in that manner. He was accepted for deeksha.
In the classification of castes, Brahmin is said to be topping the classes - but take a cue from Gautama, we learn that 'brahmanyam'  is an acquired status and it is acquired by the ability to seek truth and tell truth, and that is a possibility for everyone. We grow from a low disposition to high as we embrace and cling to truth.
satyam vada, dharma cara - satyameva jayate! We should not have to regret like Dhrutharashtra at any  point saying, 'janami ca me dharamam na me pravrutti, janami adharamam na ca me nivrtti.' I knew the truth but I could not follow it, I knew the untruth, but I could not avoid it.
May Christ Central School have Christ at its centre, who claimed I am one with the Father, I am the truth. May the metamorphosis of MGM to Christ happen with the individual student, and may Christ rule their hearts and deeds leading them ever to the ever broadening horizon of truth.
I thank you for your patient listening. May God bless us all.
